Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a method of surgically recontouring the nose to improve its proportions or correct various defects. Because the nose can significantly affect one’s ability to breathe properly, it is an important and delicate feature of the human body. The size, shape, and projection of various regions of the nose, as well as certain nasal defects, can impact breathing. Nose surgery can address a variety of concerns, including a deviated septum, a nasal hump, an over or under-projected nasal tip, flaring nostrils, certain nasal defects, and more. At 16-years-old, children have usually reached full nasal development. Once this has occurred, rhinoplasty will typically be a viable option. During the procedure, cartilage, bone, and soft tissue are altered or removed. Cartilage grafts may be used to bolster an area. Afterwards, any incisions are sealed with medical stitches. Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Ear shaping, or otoplasty, is a type of pediatric plastic surgery procedure that can correct various malformations, including macrotia, microtia, lop ear, cryptotia, cauliflower ear, Stahl’s ear, and cleft earlobe. Typically, pediatric plastic surgery procedures can take place starting at around four to five years old, depending on the evaluation of a skilled plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Berhane. Depending on the individual, a surgical procedure may not be required, because the ear cartilage of a child at that age is still highly-malleable. The older the individual, the stiffer and less-malleable their ear cartilage. During any ear reshaping procedure, general anesthesia is used, and a more well-balanced ear will be sculpted. Cleft Lip & Palate Correction
Cleft lip is a malformation of the upper lip, and cleft palate is a malformation of the roof of the mouth. These malformations can affect speech, hearing, general mouth functionality, and can make children more likely to have ear infections and require dental procedures throughout their lives. Cleft lip malformations are usually corrected with pediatric plastic surgery when the child is about three or four months old, whereas cleft palate malformations are usually corrected when the child is one year old.
